Hollywood gathered to honor television’s top talents for the second consecutive year. After the 2023 ceremony was pushed back to January 2024 due to last year’s Hollywood strikes, it’s only been eight months since TV’s brightest stars convened at Los Angeles’ LA Live Peacock Theatre to reveal the Emmy winners. Like months ago, “The Bear” stars Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach won lead and supporting actor in a comedy, respectively, and co-star Colón-Zayas received her first Emmy for supporting actress. Jean Smart of “Hacks” won lead actress in a comedy, and in the biggest surprise of the night, HBO’s “Hacks” beat out “The Bear,” which many thought was the frontrunner.
“The Bear” shattered its record of ten comedy victories in a single season, set last year, with 11 trophies on Sunday, including directing for Christopher Storer. FX also had a successful night with “Shogun,” which won an outstanding drama award, with leading actor Hiroyuki Sanada, actress Anna Sawai, and director Frederick E.O. Toye. After winning 14 Creative Arts Emmys last weekend, “Shogun” has already broken the record for most wins by a show in a single season. On Sunday, it pushed the record to 18.
Netflix’s viral smash “Baby Reindeer” won Best Limited Series or Anthology, with creator Richard Gadd taking home awards for lead acting and screenplay. His co-star Jessica Gunning, who played his stalker Martha, was named best supporting actress. Jodie Foster earned her first Emmy for her performance in HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country.”
Eugene and Dan Levy, the “Schitt’s Creek” performers, Emmy winners, and father-and-son team, hosted the 76th annual Emmy Awards. Like the previous event, the telecast featured multiple TV reunions and pairings of renowned TV parents, doctors, villains, and more.
Martin Sheen, Dulé Hill, Janel Moloney, Richard Schiff, and Allison Janney reunited on stage to celebrate the 25th anniversary of “The West Wing.” Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Seth Meyers, and Bowen Yang were among the multi-generational “Saturday Night Live” stars who took the stage to celebrate the show’s 50th season and lampoon Lorne Michaels’ 85 Emmy defeats. “Happy Days” also celebrated its 50th anniversary, with Henry Winkler and Ron Howard performing onstage in a reproduction of the set.
Famous TV dads like George Lopez, Damon Wayans, and Jesse Tyler Ferguson presented a category, as did iconic moms like Connie Britton, Meredith Baxter, and Susan Kelechi Watson; villains Antony Starr, Giancarlo Esposito, and Kathy Bates; doctors like Mindy Kaling, Zach Braff, and Mekhi Phifer, among others.
