A pregnant ex-girlfriend of the 29-year-old Westland guy is allegedly abducted and held captive in a car for over two days.
Dakota Joseph Varana faces charges related to domestic violence, illegal confinement, and tampering with an electronic device. Varana is accused of committing crimes regularly.
Varana allegedly abducted his ex-girlfriend on September 6 as she was picking him up from the Upper Peninsula, according to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office. He allegedly beat up his ex-girlfriend, stole her phone and car keys, and imprisoned her for 2.5 days in her car.
On September 8, the victim’s mother filed a missing person’s report from her Warren home. The woman told a store clerk she had been abducted in a message she gave to her that same day. When the car was found, the police made an attempt to halt Varana, but she drove away. Varana hit another car after that, according to officials, and then fled on foot before being apprehended by Westland police.
“The actions of this individual were not only criminal but profoundly cruel. By allegedly kidnapping and holding his pregnant ex-girlfriend against her will, he inflicted unimaginable trauma on both the victim and her unborn child. No one should ever have to endure such fear and helplessness,” said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido.
After being charged, Varana received a $60,000 bond.
On September 24, he is scheduled to return to court for a probable cause conference.
