Tuesday morning in a heated courtroom, the two men accused of killing a 7-year-old girl in Providence appeared before the judge.
Both Shaheem Nathaniel, 26, and Ahmari Cabrera, 19, were charged with 11 counts, including first-degree murder. It was mandated that they be detained without bond.
On August 29, Cabrera and Nathaniel are charged with firing shots towards an automobile on Florence Street.
The girl was injured by gunfire while riding in the car with her father and younger brother, according to the police. After being taken to the hospital in severe condition, she passed away four days later.
Police claim that film from a local school’s cameras caught the incident, and that footage from Flock Safety cameras showed the suspects firing weapons as they drove away.
According to authorities, the firearms discovered on Friday matched the items discovered at the site.
“It’s a really sad day and there’s going to be a time to go mourn this loss, but then a time for action to ensure that incidents like this don’t happen again in our city,” Mayor Brett Smiley said. “I know that our city is reeling from this most horrific thing, a 7-year-old child, totally innocent, being killed, and it’s just a really terrible day for the city.”
Cabrera and Nathaniel face charges in addition to murder, including:
- Battery and/or felony assault
- Defamation to commit certain crimes
- Shooting while performing a violent crime (2 offences)
- Unauthorised possession of a handgun or revolver on two separate occasions
- Two Felony conspiracy
On Tuesday, there was a noticeable presence of Providence police inside the courtroom. The families involved got into disputes as they were leaving the arraignment.
