Over the weekend, a Texas man was taken into custody in South Florida on suspicion of raping a woman while on a cruise ship.
The woman reported to authorities last week that she was raped by the suspect, Juan Campos when they were on a cruise.
Campos, 28, is being held at the Broward County Main Jail after being taken into custody upon disembarking from Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas at Port Everglades.
According to his lawyer, he stopped when the victim told him to.
“It was a normal cruise, he was with friends, they met some people on board and next thing you know, he’s charged with this crime,” said attorney Ed Hoeg.
Last week, the victim, a 20-year-old woman, and Campos were on board the ship.
According to an arrest record, they were in close physical contact on August 28 at around two in the morning.
“It sounds like they were making out, it started going a little too far when the lady said ‘stop,’ when she verbally expressed ‘stop,’ he stopped,” said Hoeg.
The victim was forced to submit to the penetration by an unidentified instrument, according to the police report, which also notes that the victim “placed her hands on the defendant’s shoulders, pushed him, and told him to stop and it hurts.”
According to the complaint, the victim told officers that Campos attempted to penetrate her again and was unsuccessful in getting her to perform oral sex on him.
“That’s not the way I read it, otherwise they would have charged it with force or using violence,” said Hoeg. “As the police themselves put it on here, it’s sexual battery, no force or violence.”
Campos is from Houston and comes from a family of law enforcement officers, according to sources.
“The family says this guy has no criminal history, he’s a great kid, he was on a vacation and they are shocked by the allegations,” said Hoeg.
Campos was given a $20,000 bond by a judge.
