A terrible turn of events saw Moscow the target of a fatal terrorist act just a few days after Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed US warnings about potential threats.
More than 100 people were injured and at least 60 people died as a result of the attack on Crocus City Hall.
Declared a Terrorist Act
There have been reports that many armed attackers entered the music venue brandishing assault rifles and opened fire without regard to who was targeted. Vivid footage that went viral on social media showed the terrifying experience concertgoers had as a result of the mayhem and terror that followed.
The shooters started firing in the foyer before making their way into the main music hall, where the crowd had gathered for a show. An additional explosion that occurred within the venue increased the damage, causing flames to spread to the roof and burn through a significant portion of the building.
This tragedy is made much more distressing by the history of earlier alerts. Only a few weeks prior, the US embassy in Russia sent a security advisory alerting people to the likelihood that terrorist activities may target major gatherings, such as concerts, in Moscow.

Putin Brushes Aside Security Alerts
President Putin, however, dismissed these alerts as provocative, portraying them as an attempt to undermine the stability of Russian society.
The fact that Russia’s foreign ministry swiftly denounced the attack highlights how serious the issue is. Solidarizing with the relatives of the deceased, they strongly denounced the attack on defenseless bystanders taking part in a cultural celebration.
The terrorist organization ISIS, which has a troubled history in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iran, swiftly claimed credit for the attack. Later, US officials confirmed that the Group was involved and said that Islamic State-Khorasan, one of its branches, was responsible for the masterminding of the heinous act.
The disclosure that the ISIShas been conducting operations in Russia poses concerning queries regarding the security environment of the country. The previous warning from the US embassy, which has now been tragically confirmed by events, emphasizes the ongoing threat that terrorist organizations represent on a worldwide scale.
The world community is in solidarity with the victims and their families as Moscow deals with the fallout from this senseless act of terror. However, amid the shock and loss, there is a stark reminder of the ongoing fight against terrorism and the need for international cooperation to combat this evil.
