Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders has announced the deployment of troops to assist Texas in addressing the ongoing migrant crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border.
This decision comes at a crucial juncture as Texas faces legal challenges to its initiatives aimed at curbing illegal immigration.
Deploying Troops for Border Security
The Arkansas National Guard will dispatch 40 Guardsmen to bolster the Texas National Guard’s operations between April 1 and May 30, according to reports from Fox News Digital.
While under the command of Governor Sanders, these troops will work in tandem with the Texas National Guard, which remains the lead agency in border security efforts.
Arkansas, under GOP leadership, has consistently stood in solidarity with Texas, having previously deployed approximately 80 Guardsmen last July and 40 in the summer of 2021 to assist in border security operations.
The primary objective of the Arkansas troops deployed to the southern border will be to enhance surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities, as well as to augment detection and tracking capabilities for their Texas counterparts, as per the governor’s office.
Governor Sanders, in a statement to Fox News Digital, criticized the Biden administration for what she perceives as a failure to address the crisis adequately. She accused the administration of leaving the border vulnerable to illegal immigration, drugs, and human trafficking.
Sanders emphasized the importance of states stepping up where the federal government falls short.
Meanwhile, Maj. Gen. Jonathan Stubbs, Arkansas’ Adjutant General, highlighted the state’s history of assisting neighboring states in times of crisis. He expressed confidence in the readiness of the Arkansas National Guard to support Texas’s operations effectively.
The decision to send reinforcements comes amid growing concerns of a potential surge in migration across the U.S.-Mexico border in the coming months.
Fiscal Year 2023 witnessed a record 2.4 million migrant encounters, with December marking the first time in recorded history that more than 300,000 encounters occurred in a single month.
Additionally, turmoil in Haiti has raised apprehensions about a new wave of migrants, primarily by sea but also potentially via the land border.
Republicans have squarely blamed the Biden administration’s policies for exacerbating the crisis, while the administration contends that comprehensive reforms and increased funding from Congress are necessary to address what it terms a “broken” system. The administration has urged the passage of a bipartisan Senate bill aimed at bolstering staffing and funding for border security.
