Ghislaine Maxwell, convicted of aiding Jeffrey Epstein’s abuse of underage girls, is making a bold legal move to challenge her conviction and lengthy prison sentence.
In a hearing before the 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday, Maxwell’s defense team argued that she was shielded from prosecution due to an immunity agreement struck between federal prosecutors in Florida and Epstein in 2007.
Maxwell’s Defense Claims Immunity from Prosecution
Ghislaine Maxwell’s attorney, Diana Fabi Samson, asserted that the plea agreement, which aimed to immunize Epstein from future prosecution, should extend to Maxwell as well.
Samson emphasized the importance of upholding trust in the government’s plea agreements, stating that denying its validity undermines this trust.
During the trial, Ghislaine Maxwell had previously raised this argument and requested a hearing to delve into the intentions of the Florida prosecutors.
However, the trial judge dismissed this request, ruling that prosecutors in New York were not bound by the Florida agreement.
Assistant US Attorney Andrew Rohrbach reiterated during the appeal that the agreement was specific to the Southern District of Florida and did not extend to Maxwell. Rohrbach emphasized that the agreement aimed to shield Epstein from prosecution in Florida alone.
