Amidst mounting concerns over illegal immigration in the lead-up to the 2024 election, a recent Monmouth poll has revealed a notable shift in American attitudes towards the construction of a wall along the southern border.
According to the poll released on Monday, 53 percent of Americans now express support for building a border wall with Mexico, marking a significant increase from the 42 percent recorded in 2019.
2024 Election Looms
The survey highlights a bipartisan consensus, with 86 percent of Republicans, 58 percent of Independents, and 17 percent of Democrats backing the idea of a border wall. This represents a notable departure from previous years, with support among Democrats and Independents rising by 15 points and among Republicans by 14 points since 2019.
The issue of immigration has undergone substantial evolution since former President Donald Trump’s initial foray into politics. Trump’s vocal advocacy for a border wall, dating back to his 2015 presidential campaign, resonated with his base and remains a central tenet of his political platform.
Despite facing challenges in fulfilling his campaign promise during his tenure, Trump’s administration managed to construct 458 miles of primary and secondary barriers along the border, according to reports from the US Customs and Border Protection.

Poll Highlights Demand for Border Wall
In contrast, President Joe Biden assumed office with a pledge to halt further construction, vowing not to authorize “another foot of wall” during his administration. However, the Biden administration’s subsequent approach to border security has been met with criticism, particularly as the issue of migration across the southern border has escalated into a crisis.
The poll also underscores a broader consensus among voters, with 84 percent expressing varying degrees of concern regarding illegal immigration. This heightened awareness reflects the enduring significance of border security in American political discourse.
In response to the escalating crisis, both Biden and Trump have announced plans to visit the border, underscoring the salience of border security as a major issue in the 2024 campaign. As the nation grapples with the complexities of immigration policy, the resurgence of support for a border wall underscores the enduring influence of this divisive issue on the political landscape.
