Livingston Girl, 11, Found Dead in River, Person of Interest Charged with Murder

The tight-knit community of Livingston, Texas, was struck with grief as authorities announced the tragic discovery of 11-year-old Audrii Cunningham’s body in the Trinity River. Audrii, who failed to board her school bus last Thursday, had sparked a nationwide search effort, culminating in the devastating revelation on Tuesday.

The announcement came during a somber press conference held by the Polk County District Attorney’s office, where it was revealed that Don Steven McDougal, a person of interest in the case, would be charged with capital murder.

McDougal’s Link to Audrii’s Disappearance

McDougal, who resided in a trailer behind Audrii’s home, had been taken into custody over the weekend on an unrelated charge and is currently detained at the Polk County Jail.

The events leading to Audrii’s disappearance and subsequent death unfolded with a chilling narrative. McDougal, admitting to authorities that he was with Audrii on the day she vanished, remained enigmatic regarding her whereabouts. Despite his claims of leaving the house with Audrii, uncertainty loomed over whether he had escorted her to the bus stop.

The search for Audrii led authorities to focus their efforts on the Trinity River, where a coordinated operation involving multiple agencies was undertaken. The Trinity River Authority even assisted by lowering water levels to aid in the search efforts.

The tight-knit community of Livingston, Texas, was struck with grief as authorities announced the tragic discovery of 11-year-old Audrii Cunningham’s body in the Trinity River.

It was near a bridge over the river that officials discovered Audrii’s remains, prompting the area to be cordoned off as a crime scene. While the cause of Audrii’s death has yet to be disclosed, authorities asserted having sufficient evidence to pursue a murder charge against McDougal.

As the investigation progresses, a warrant is being prepared, and the Harris County Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy to ascertain the exact circumstances surrounding Audrii’s demise.

In a troubling development, it was revealed that McDougal, despite his reluctance to cooperate fully with detectives, had provided information leading them to various locations around the lake. Notably, shortly after Audrii’s disappearance, her backpack, later confirmed to be hers, was found near the lake, further deepening the mystery surrounding her fate.

Audrii’s disappearance had sent shockwaves through the community, prompting a statewide AMBER Alert and drawing attention from concerned individuals nationwide.
