Mexico’s Measures to Handle Rising Asylum Requests Targeting Canada

In a recent development highlighting the diplomatic dialogue between Mexico and Canada, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador disclosed that his administration is actively addressing Canada’s concerns regarding the significant surge of asylum requests from Mexican nationals.

According to statistics compiled by the Canadian Immigration and Refugee Commission spanning from January to September 2023, Mexicans submitted the highest volume of asylum applications, totaling 17,500, surpassing even Haitian applicants who trailed with just over 8,500 requests.

Diplomatic Dialogue

López Obrador shed light on discussions held during a bilateral meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in San Francisco, notably at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum summit in November. 

Trudeau had expressed Canada’s apprehensions regarding the escalating number of asylum claims by Mexicans, indicating potential involvement of organized crime in facilitating the migration process.

Acknowledging Trudeau’s concerns, López Obrador affirmed, “We are dealing with it.” He highlighted ongoing efforts between Mexican Foreign Minister Alicia Barcena and her Canadian counterpart, Melanie Joly, who have engaged in multiple dialogues to address the issue.

Trudeau’s recent remarks underscored Ottawa’s proactive stance, indicating ongoing talks with Mexico City to explore strategies aimed at mitigating the surge in asylum requests. Trudeau hinted at the possibility of organized crime networks orchestrating the migration flow, without specifying particular criminal entities involved.
