Missing Your 1099-MISC? How to Still Claim Your Minnesota Tax Rebate

Last year, many Minnesotans received a welcomed boost to their bank accounts in the form of one-time checks and direct deposits as part of a state funding surplus redistribution.

However, as tax season rolls around, more than two million residents are facing the potential complication of paying federal taxes on these rebates.

A Guide to Filing Your Taxes

The process of properly filing taxes to account for the Minnesota tax rebate payment can be confusing. Here’s a breakdown of how to handle it:

  • Professional Assistance: If you prefer to have a professional handle your taxes, provide them with the 1099-MISC form you received in the mail, which shows the rebate amount received. They can easily incorporate this information into your tax return.
  • Electronic Filing: Using online tax services like TurboTax is another convenient option. When inputting your income, look for sections labeled “1099 MISC.” Enter the payer’s name (State of Minnesota) and the rebate amount as “other income” on the form.
  • Manual Filing: For those who prefer to file by hand, follow the instructions on the 1099-MISC form itself. It typically directs you to subtract the rebate amount from your Minnesota taxable income on line 33 of schedule M1M. Additionally, homeowners should note that they need to make a subtraction on the M1PR form, writing the rebate amount on line 10 under “other subtractions.”
