The customary reporting of US murder counts, which is based on the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report, is being challenged, with over 7,000 police departments failing to provide data.
Recent changes in data-gathering methods further hindered reporting accuracy, particularly affecting major cities like New York and Los Angeles.
Historic Drop in US Murder Rates for 2023
A data analysis firm, AH Datalytics, presents a more detailed and seemingly accurate picture, indicating a significant drop in murder rates across large US cities in 2023.
Jeff Asher, a former CIA employee, and head of AH Datalytics, shared insights with ABC, projecting a historic decline of 2,000 murders in the United States for 2023.
He emphasized the unprecedented nature of this one-year drop, encompassing cities of all sizes, suburbs, rural counties, and both tiny and large urban centers. This decline is regarded as a national trend, marking positive strides in public safety.
While murders in America’s largest cities still number in the hundreds, the new analysis showcases a low double-digit decrease in most major metros.
Chicago reported the highest number of murders at 599, down by 13% from 2022. Philadelphia followed with 409 murders (down by 21%), New York at 380 (down 11%), Los Angeles at 377 (down 15%), and Houston at 377 (down 11%).
Notably, Chicago, Houston, and Philadelphia face more severe challenges than their raw numbers suggest due to their smaller total populations compared to New York and Los Angeles.

Positive American Trends in Murder Rates
Chicago, in particular, grapples with a concentrated issue in specific police districts (18th, 19th, 20th, and 24th), where homicide rates rival those in the world’s most violent cities.
The high murder rate in these districts is primarily attributed to the prevalence of gang violence and drug-related incidents, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions in these geographical areas.
Despite the positive trends observed in 2023, Jeff Asher did not provide a forecast for the murder count in 2024. The data for 2023, however, instills hope for continued improvements in public safety.
It underscores the importance of accurate data analysis, urging a reevaluation of reporting methods to better reflect the true nature of crime trends in the United States.
As communities strive for safer environments, collaboration between law enforcement, policymakers, and data analysis firms becomes crucial in developing effective crime prevention strategies and addressing underlying socio-economic factors contributing to criminal activities.
