The Justice Department is set to release a comprehensive report on Thursday, detailing its review of the law enforcement response to the tragic Uvalde school shooting in May 2022.
A spokesperson for the DOJ has confirmed the imminent publication of the “Critical Incident Review,” which aims to provide a thorough account of how law enforcement handled the devastating event at Robb Elementary School.
Independent Analysis, Not Criminal Investigation
It is essential to note that the review is not a criminal investigation into the incident that claimed the lives of 19 children and two teachers. Instead, the focus is on offering an independent and comprehensive analysis of law enforcement’s response.
The examination encompasses critical aspects such as officer training, command and control response, deployment of resources, and the support provided to victims and their families.
Conducted by the DOJ’s Office of Community-Oriented Policing Services (COPS), the review involved a team of federal staff and subject matter experts, including former local, state, and federal law enforcement officials. This approach is designed to ensure a detailed and impartial assessment of the events surrounding the Uvalde school shooting.

Uvalde Tragedy Spurs Criticism
Criticism of the law enforcement response during the massacre has been vocalized by Uvalde families and state officials. The incident marked the second deadliest school shooting in US history, and concerns were raised about the 77-minute delay before any of the nearly 400 assembled law enforcement officers confronted the assailant.

The siege ultimately concluded with a counterassault led by a SWAT team from the U.S. Border Patrol, resulting in the fatal shooting of the lone gunman, Salvador Ramos.
Meanwhile, a criminal investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety is underway to determine if public safety failures contributed to the tragic deaths of the victims.
In the aftermath of the shooting, significant actions were taken, reflecting the urgency to address concerns and shortcomings. School district police chief Pete Arredondo was relieved of duty, the entire district police force was disbanded, and several state troopers were dismissed.
