A former Aurora, Colorado, police officer, Randy Roedema, is set to be sentenced on Friday after being found guilty of criminally negligent homicide and assault in the third degree in connection with the tragic death of 23-year-old Elijah McClain in August 2019.
The verdict, delivered on October 13, marked the first trial related to McClain’s death, and Roedema could face several years in prison for the convictions.
Officers Rosenblatt and Woodyard Found Not Guilty
In the same trial, another officer, Jason Rosenblatt, was found not guilty on charges of reckless manslaughter, assault in the second degree, and criminally negligent homicide. Nathan Woodyard, the first officer on the scene, was also found not guilty on charges of reckless manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide.
Separately, two paramedics involved in the incident, Peter Cichuniec and Jeremy Cooper, were convicted of criminally negligent homicide on December 23. The paramedics were accused of administering an excessive amount of ketamine to sedate McClain after his encounter with the police.
Cichuniec faced additional charges of assault in the second degree for unlawful administration of drugs, while Cooper was acquitted of the same charge.

The Confrontation and Escalation of Elijah McClain’s Encounter with Police
Elijah McClain’s encounter with the police began on August 24, 2019, when he was confronted by officers while walking home from a convenience store. Unarmed and wearing a ski mask, McClain was stopped by the police, who deemed him “suspicious.”
The situation escalated, leading to McClain being placed in a carotid hold and forcibly restrained on the ground.
EMTs arrived at the scene and administered a shot of ketamine to McClain, following department policy for “rapid tranquilization.” McClain, who weighed 143 pounds, received a higher dose than recommended for someone his size and subsequently overdosed. His cause of death was later amended to “complications of ketamine administration following forcible restraint.”
