In a shocking incident on Monday night, a 30-year-old Park City resident, Kyler Efinger, was discovered dead inside an airplane engine at Salt Lake City International Airport.
According to the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD), Efinger had breached an emergency exit door, walked onto the tarmac, and climbed into the jet’s engine.
Unsettling Discovery Sparks Investigation After Late-Night Disturbance Report
The unsettling discovery was made after officers responded to a report of a disturbance from the manager of a store inside the airport just before 10 p.m.
The manager informed the airport control center that he had witnessed a man passing through the emergency exit. Shortly after, personal items belonging to Efinger, including shoes and clothing, were found on one of the airport’s runways, as detailed in a police statement outlining the incident’s timeline.
Less than 15 minutes after the initial sighting, police and airport staff located Efinger inside the engine intake cowling, a part directing airflow to the engine fan section. Despite immediate efforts, including CPR, Efinger was pronounced dead at the scene.
The engine was rotating at the time, as the plane was situated on a de-icing pad, adding complexity to the circumstances surrounding Efinger’s death.

Salt Lake City Airport Incident
The aircraft involved was a commercial flight en route from Salt Lake City to San Francisco, carrying passengers. Although the passengers were promptly removed from the plane, the incident did not disrupt overall airport operations.
The exact cause of Efinger’s death remains unclear, and the SLCPD is conducting an investigation into the tragic incident. The initial findings suggest that Efinger gained access to the airport’s ramp area through the emergency exit and subsequently climbed inside the engine, leading to his untimely demise.
This disturbing event highlights the challenges faced by airport authorities in maintaining security and preventing unauthorized access to restricted areas.
As investigations continue, Salt Lake City International Airport will undoubtedly review its security protocols to prevent such incidents in the future, and the community is left grappling with the tragic loss of Kyler Efinger.
