CES Warns of an AI Tsunami Sweeping the Tech Landscape

As the curtain rises on the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2024 in Las Vegas on January 9, the tech world braces for an overwhelming surge of artificial intelligence (AI) innovation.

CES, the largest annual gathering in the US for the consumer electronics industry, is known for its dazzling array of gadgets, prototypes, and groundbreaking technologies. This year, however, the spotlight is firmly on AI, marking a pivotal moment in the industry’s evolution.

ChatGPT Sparks AI Arms Race

The advent of generative AI technology, notably with the release of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in November 2022, has catalyzed an AI arms race. With a scant six weeks behind the last CES, the technological revolution spurred by ChatGPT promises to shape CES 2024 into a transformative event.

Anshel Sag, a principal analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy, predicts that AI will flood every corner of CES, creating a tsunami of announcements that will reshape the narrative around industry trends.

Expect AI to permeate various consumer electronics, from cars and scooters to headphones, cameras, speakers, and televisions. The integration of ChatGPT-style question-and-response services for spoken commands will be a common theme.

However, the real game-changers will be advancements from industry giants like Intel, Qualcomm, and AMD, expected to unveil chips supporting on-device AI services. These chips will process AI tasks locally, enhancing responsiveness in applications such as computer vision, voice-to-text services, and generative computing.

As the curtain rises on the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2024 in Las Vegas on January 9, the tech world braces for an overwhelming surge of artificial intelligence (AI) innovation.

Gary Shapiro, CEO of the Consumer Technology Association, anticipates that while AI will be a major focus at CES, it will eventually become a ubiquitous ingredient in technology, much like the internet. He notes that the emphasis will shift toward exploring how companies implement generative AI rather than showcasing it as a standalone feature.

Beyond AI, CES 2024 will spotlight other key trends. The automotive industry, though taking a slightly diminished spotlight, will see the unveiling of new electric vehicles from companies like Honda.

Health tech is set to play a prominent role, with an increased emphasis on beauty tech, marked by a keynote address from L’Oréal, a first in CES history. Additionally, a renewed focus on extended reality tech is anticipated as companies prepare for the launch of Apple’s Vision Pro headset or seek to compete with it.

CES 2024 promises to be a bustling arena where companies vie for attention and revenue with groundbreaking tech announcements. Whether it’s embedding a new chip for enhanced communication or creating more human-like interactions, the convergence of AI and consumer electronics is set to reshape the industry landscape in profound ways.
