Woman Sues Dentist Over Extensive Procedures in One Sitting

A Minnesota woman, Kathleen Wilson, has filed a lawsuit against Dr. Kevin Molldrem of Molldrem Family Dentistry, alleging negligence and malpractice in a dental visit that resulted in four root canals, eight dental crowns, and 20 fillings.

Wilson claims the treatment led to her disfigurement, prompting legal action against the dentist for providing substandard care and an unsafe dosage of anesthesia. The lawsuit also accuses Molldrem of falsifying medical records to conceal the alleged errors.

Anesthesia Overdose in the Molldrem Lawsuit

The Hennepin County District Court lawsuit claims that Wilson suffered severe damage as a result of the therapy in July 2020.  According to her legal team’s expert, Dr. Avrum Goldstein, Molldrem breached various duty-of-care standards.

The report identified poor-quality treatment and an unsafe dosage of anesthesia as critical factors contributing to Wilson’s alleged disfigurement.

Dr. Goldstein, who reviewed Wilson’s medical records, acknowledged Molldrem’s correct diagnosis but criticized the poor-quality treatment provided.

He highlighted the rarity of decay on virtually every tooth in Wilson’s mouth. He emphasized that attempting to address all the issues in a single visit was not only contrary to what was indicated but also humanely impossible.

One of the critical issues raised in the expert report was the administration of an excessive dosage of anesthesia. While the maximum recommended dosage is 490 mg, Molldrem allegedly administered 960 mg to Wilson during the single visit.

Dr. Goldstein expressed concern about the challenges of maintaining adequate anesthesia during such prolonged appointments.

A Minnesota woman, Kathleen Wilson, has filed a lawsuit against Dr. Kevin Molldrem of Molldrem Family Dentistry, alleging negligence and malpractice in a dental visit that resulted in four root canals, eight dental crowns, and 20 fillings.

Following the disputed dental work, Wilson sought a second opinion at a different dental office, revealing recurrent decay and other damage. She subsequently underwent treatment at the University of Minnesota Dental School in 2022 to repair and replace the restorations.

Dr. Goldstein emphasized the potential need for complete tooth replacement with implants, rendering the previous work and expenses futile.

Beyond the physical consequences, Wilson claims to have suffered pain, embarrassment, disfigurement, and distress.

In her lawsuit, she is seeking a minimum of $50,000 in damages to cover medical costs and compensate for the alleged emotional and physical toll of the dental ordeal.

The case involving Dr. Kevin Molldrem highlights the possible repercussions of dental malpractice claims, the intricacies of extended dental operations, and the significance of abiding by established standards of care.

The case serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability in the healthcare sector and the effect that alleged negligence can have on patients’ lives as the legal proceedings progress.
