Florida is gearing up for a powerful storm system, which is anticipated to bring torrential rain, high winds, and severe thunderstorms.
The impact of this system has already been felt in Florida and South Carolina over the weekend, with projections suggesting its effects will linger through Monday.
Weather Havoc in Tampa Bay
The National Weather Service Tampa Bay reported coastal flooding in the Tampa Bay area on Saturday due to heavy rains. By noon on Sunday, over 33,000 customers in Florida were without power, though this number saw a significant reduction as restoration efforts progressed.
Florida Power & Light Co., the state’s largest power utility, announced ongoing restoration efforts, urging caution around downed power lines and standing water.
South Carolina, too, experienced power outages, with over 8,000 customers affected. Santee Cooper, the state’s largest power provider, assured the public of their crews working on outages as safety permits.

Florida Power & Light Co. Mobilizes Restoration
Meanwhile, dangerous flooding is unfolding along the lower South Carolina coast, including downtown Charleston, leading to road closures and flash flood warnings.
In New York City, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority is taking precautions in anticipation of heavy rain and high winds on Sunday night. The MTA plans to ban empty tractor-trailers and tandem trucks on bridges and in tunnels from 10 p.m. Sunday to 2 p.m.
Monday, a travel advisory has also been issued, warning of potential coastal flooding of up to 1 or 2 feet by Sunday night.
Storm chaser Andrew Elswick shared videos from Myrtle Beach and Cherry Grove in South Carolina, depicting street flooding and powerful winds that even shook his vehicle. Mayor Eric Adams of New York City advised residents to stay vigilant and secure loose items outdoors ahead of the expected weather conditions.
Parts of Maine are also on alert for heavy rain, with the National Weather Service predicting significant rainfall across mountains and foothills.
Strong, potentially damaging winds are expected to follow on Monday, raising concerns about coastal flooding during high tide and additional flooding in inland areas due to rainfall and snowmelt.
