Olympic Gold Medalist Klete Keller Receives 36-Month Probation for Capitol Riot Involvement

A two-time gold medalist, former US Olympic swimmer Klete Keller, faced sentencing on Friday for his involvement in the riot at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. 

Despite pleading guilty to a federal felony, Keller managed to avoid prison time and was instead sentenced to 36 months of probation, six months of home detention, and 10 hours of community service monthly. 

Debates Erupt Over Capitol Attack Sentencing

The sentencing has sparked debates over the severity of punishment for those involved in the Capitol attack. Indicted on seven federal counts, Keller ultimately pleaded guilty to obstructing an official proceeding, carrying a maximum sentence of 20 years in jail. 

Federal prosecutors sought ten months in prison, arguing that Keller’s actions were unconscionable and a stain on the country’s narrative.  However, they advocated for a lighter sentence given his cooperation and remorse. The defense emphasized Keller’s three years of pre-trial suffering and his status as a convicted felon.

Judge Leon acknowledged Keller’s remorse and cooperation, stating that this wasn’t a one-size-fits all case. He suggested probation, urging Keller to speak to young adults about learning from mistakes. Keller expressed gratitude, vowing not to let the judge down. Leon emphasized that he expected Keller to succeed in his rehabilitation.

In a letter dated January 23, 2023, Keller apologized for his actions, expressing shame and embarrassment. 

He admitted unlawfully entering the Capitol and disrupting the certification of the Electoral College vote. Acknowledging his influence as a former Olympian, Keller took full responsibility, pledged humility in accepting his punishment, and vowed not to repeat his mistakes.

Prosecutors detailed Keller’s participation in the riot, including chanting derogatory phrases near the Senate chamber.  Keller retreated when law enforcement used force and chemical irritants. After leaving, he disposed of his Olympic jacket and destroyed his phone with a hammer. 

The emotional impact hit him when he asked for a photograph, realizing the gravity of his actions.

Keller, a commercial real estate agent, has highlighted his volunteer work with the Prison Professors Charitable Corporation since his case began. 

He requested consideration for his efforts toward personal growth. He asked for a fair judgment, hoping his case would serve as a warning against illegal conduct, especially in moments of political enthusiasm.
