SpaceX Under Congressional Spotlight: Lawmakers Call for Investigation into Employee Injuries

Hundreds of previously unreported workplace injuries at Elon Musk’s SpaceX have been discovered during a probe, leading three US congressmen to demand more examination of the company’s worker safety procedures.  

The report, published on November 10, 2023, detailed a staggering 600 injuries since 2014, including crushed limbs, amputations, head injuries, and tragically, one fatality. 

Lawmakers Call for Increased Oversight of Worker Safety

The alarming findings have raised serious questions about the safety protocols in place at SpaceX’s US manufacturing and launch sites.

Representative Zoe Lofgren, the top Democrat on the House of Representatives Science, Space and Technology Committee, expressed deep concern over the report’s findings. 

As the committee overseeing NASA’s budget and the activities of its contractors, Lofgren emphasized the need to take these revelations seriously. 

Similarly, Democratic Representative Mark Takano, a member of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, which oversees worker safety matters, deemed the report “deeply troubling.” 

Takano highlighted the unacceptability of the horrific and frequent violations at SpaceX, emphasizing the overdue accountability for those affected, especially considering the federal government’s substantial partnership with the aerospace company.

SpaceX’s Financial Ties with NASA

The US space agency NASA has allocated a significant sum to SpaceX, amounting to $11.8 billion as a private space contractor. This financial partnership has further intensified concerns among lawmakers, as it underscores the responsibility and accountability that SpaceX should uphold, given its pivotal role in the nation’s space exploration endeavors. 

The lawmakers argue that such a financial commitment from the government necessitates a higher standard of safety practices and oversight.

Democratic Representative Donald Norcross of New Jersey, also a member of the education and workforce committee, echoed the sentiments of his colleagues, deeming the findings alarming and certainly a cause for concern.

The collective call from these lawmakers emphasizes the urgent need for accountability and corrective action within SpaceX to address the reported workplace safety issues. 

The company must reassess its safety protocols, implement necessary improvements, and ensure that its workforce is protected from the identified hazards.
