Sam Altman has announced his departure from the CEO role at OpenAI, the artificial intelligence research laboratory renowned for its popular conversation bot, ChatGPT.
The announcement on Friday revealed that Altman’s exit comes in the wake of a comprehensive review process conducted by the company’s board of directors.
OpenAI Leadership Shift
OpenAI explained in a statement that the board’s deliberative review highlighted concerns about Altman’s consistency in communication, suggesting he could have been more consistently candid with the board.
This lack of transparency hindered the board’s ability to fulfill its responsibilities, leading to a loss of confidence in Altman’s capacity to lead OpenAI effectively.
Mira Murati, the current chief technology officer at OpenAI, is taking over the CEO role on an interim basis. The sudden leadership shift marks a significant moment for the company, which has played a pivotal role in advancing artificial intelligence technologies, mainly through the release of ChatGPT.
Altman, expressing his sentiments about his time at OpenAI, stated, “I loved my time at OpenAI. It was transformative for me, and, hopefully, the world a little bit. Most of all, I loved working with such talented people.” He also hinted at discussing his future plans at a later date.

Sam Altman Steps Down as CEO
Following Altman’s departure, OpenAI President and Co-founder Greg Brockman also announced his resignation based on the day’s news.
In a message to the OpenAI team, Brockman expressed his well wishes, stating, “Genuinely wishing you all nothing but the best. I continue to believe in the mission of creating safe AGI that benefits all of humanity.”
OpenAI, founded as a non-profit in 2015, gained significant attention when ChatGPT was made available to the public a year ago. The chatbot has since garnered over 100 million weekly users, according to Altman’s announcement earlier this month.
The company’s growth has been substantial, with a reported revenue of over $1 billion from the sale of its artificial intelligence products as of October.
Microsoft, a longstanding partner of OpenAI, invested $10 billion in the company in January, further solidifying their collaboration that began with a $1 billion investment four years ago. Microsoft’s search engine, Bing, provides users with access to ChatGPT.
Sam Altman, known for his insights into the potential and risks of artificial intelligence, has consistently emphasized the need for caution in developing and deploying AI technologies.
In a March interview with ABC News, he highlighted the transformative power of AI while also underscoring the associated risks. Altman urged lawmakers to impose regulations on AI, advocating for regulatory intervention to mitigate the risks of increasingly powerful AI models.
