An unmanned US Navy warship recently dropped deadly weapons in international waters in the Middle East as part of a historic and innovative drill.
This operation, named Digital Talon, marked the first time such a demonstration took place in the region.
Advancing US Navy’s Autonomous Systems
Conducted by the Navy’s Task Force 59, a unit specializing in unmanned and artificial intelligence technologies, this exercise showcased the military’s continued commitment to advancing its capabilities in the era of autonomous systems.
The operation, which occurred on October 23, showcased the successful application of manned-unmanned teaming as a human operator ashore oversaw the identification and targeting of simulated hostile forces.
Subsequently, live munitions were launched from an unmanned vessel to destroy a target boat, with each attempt resulting in direct hits, according to a U.S. Naval Forces Central Command news release.

Navy’s Precision Strike with Unmanned Boat
A video released by the Navy captured the moment when an unmanned boat, equipped with two outboard motors, swiftly traversed the waters. Naval operators remotely monitored the process, ultimately engaging the target with a “Lethal Miniature Aerial Missile System.” The precision of the operation was evident in the successful impact of the missile on the designated target.
Vice Adm. Brad Cooper emphasized the importance of advancing unmanned systems and artificial intelligence technologies, stating, “We have proven these unmanned platforms can enhance fleet lethality, strengthening regional maritime security and enhancing deterrence against malign activity.”
Notably, this wasn’t the first demonstration of such capabilities by the U.S. Navy. In September, a similar exercise involved several unmanned aquatic and aerial vehicles tracking Iranian Navy and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy vessels during routine patrols in and around the Strait of Hormuz.
Cooper mentioned the integration of 12 different unmanned platforms with manned ships during this exercise, indicating a significant leap in the Navy’s operational capabilities.
