Mexican drug cartel violence near the Texas-Mexico border, especially by the Rio Grande, is intensifying, causing widespread concerns.
In a disturbing display of aggression, a recent video released by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) captures cartel members hurling explosives as part of their ongoing campaign of intimidation.
Texas Authorizes DPS and Rangers for Security
The video, shared on social media by the Texas DPS, features both thermal and non-thermal views of a group of cartel operatives. In the thermal view, it’s chilling to witness four operatives throwing two objects that explode within seconds. The non-thermal view reveals sparks spiraling before detonating upon impact with the ground.
The Texas DPS has noted that these cartel operatives are not only engaging in violent acts but are also escalating their intimidation tactics in the vicinity of Fronton Island, a small piece of land in the Rio Grande that has become a notorious hotspot for cartels and illicit activities.
Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham had granted the Texas DPS and Texas Rangers permission to patrol this area to address the escalating security threats.

Fronton Island’s Sovereignty Clarification
While the sovereignty of Fronton Island is not disputed, the state took the unusual step of officially declaring it as state-owned to eliminate any ambiguity. This declaration was made in response to a request from law enforcement agencies, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.
The situation is further exacerbated by ongoing gun battles between rival cartels in Los Guerra, Mexico, over control of lucrative smuggling routes. These battles have a direct impact on the safety of Fronton’s residents and the effectiveness of border operations, as the violence spills over into this region.
The continued aggression of these cartel operatives and their increasingly bold intimidation tactics underscore the need for enhanced security measures and collaboration between local, state, and federal authorities.
It’s imperative to address these threats to ensure the safety of the border region and protect both law enforcement and the residents living in these vulnerable areas.
