Florida Governor DeSantis Urges Universities to Suspend Pro-Hamas Student Organizations

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who is also a Republican presidential candidate, has taken a strong stance against pro-Hamas student groups.

In a recent move, his administration has directed Florida universities to deactivate student chapters that express support for Hamas and its terror attacks.

DeSantis’ Firm Stance Against Pro-Hamas Student Groups

National Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) chapters across the country had authored pro-Hamas letters following a brutal surprise attack by the terrorist group on Israel. This attack resulted in the tragic deaths of 1,400 Israelis, including 31 Americans.

Resources published by the National SJP were identified by Ray Rodrigues, the chancellor of the State University System of Florida, as potentially constituting a felony under Florida law knowingly providing material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization.

In a letter, Rodrigues noted that the student chapters were linked to the National SJP, which had shared a toolkit during Operation AlAqsa Flood. Due to the National SJP’s terrorist ties, Governor DeSantis and his administration chose to deactivate these student chapters. They are urged to create new organizations that follow Florida laws and university policies, with institutions advised to extend fall application deadlines if needed.

Diverse Campus Responses to Hamas Attack

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who is also a Republican presidential candidate, has taken a strong stance against pro-Hamas student groups.

The events surrounding the Hamas attack on Israel led to various responses on university campuses. Some clubs organized martyr vigils to memorialize Palestinian lives, while Students for Justice in Palestine organized protests and rallies in support of Hamas violence.

However, there was a public backlash, leading some pro-Hamas students to recant their statements. Notably, some law firms withdrew employment offers from law students who had expressed support for Hamas.

Governor DeSantis has maintained a strong pro-Israel stance and has taken actions to support Israel and condemn the attacks. Florida recently evacuated hundreds of U.S. citizens from Israel on a chartered flight.

DeSantis also plans to increase state sanctions on Iran, a financial supporter of Hamas, and if he were to be elected president, he stated his intention to cancel visas for students celebrating Hamas.

This approach reflects the governor’s commitment to countering support for terrorist organizations and ensuring the safety and security of Americans and American allies.
