To alleviate food insecurity among school-aged children in Iowa, the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services and the Iowa Department of Education have unveiled a critical initiative.
This initiative aims to provide essential food assistance to eligible students through the Pandemic Electronic Benefits Transfer (P-EBT) program for the summer of 2023.
Iowa Launches P-EBT Program to Combat Child Food Insecurity
The USDA Food and Nutrition Service has approved the Summer 2023 P-EBT program, which will benefit more than a quarter of a million eligible school-aged children in Iowa.
This program comes as a response to the ongoing need for food support and is set to provide a vital lifeline to families across the state.
$120 P-EBT Cards for Eligible Children
Under this initiative, eligible school-age children in Iowa will receive a $120 P-EBT card for food assistance.
The distribution of these cards is expected to be completed by October 4, providing timely service to families facing food insecurity.
The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services estimates that approximately 240,000 Iowa children qualify for this benefit, amounting to $28 million in food assistance.

Eligibility Criteria
Eligibility for the Summer 2023 P-EBT program is primarily based on the participation of school-age children in the National School Lunch Program during the 2022-2023 school year.
Specifically, children in grades K-12 who received free or reduced-price meals at school through this program as of May 31, 2023, are eligible to receive this much-needed benefit.
However, it’s essential to note that specific categories of students are not eligible for the 2023 Summer P-EBT benefits.
This includes non-school-aged children in childcare, virtual school students during the 2022-2023 school year, homeschooled school-aged children during the same school year, and dual-enrolled virtual students.

What Can P-EBT Cards Be Used For?
Recipients of the Summer 2023 P-EBT cards will have the flexibility to use them to purchase eligible food items wherever SNAP EBT cards are accepted.
These cards cover a wide range of essential food items, including dairy products, eggs, meat, cereals, rice, pasta, bread, fresh, frozen, canned, or dried fruits and vegetables, as well as ingredients for cooking, baby formula, diabetic foods, garden seeds, and plants for growing food at home.
It’s important to note that hot or prepared foods, pet food, and non-food items are not eligible for P-EBT card purchases.
This program serves as a critical lifeline for those facing food insecurity in Iowa. However, there are additional resources available to support families in need.
Eligibility for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) can be checked, and applications can be submitted to further address food-related challenges.
Moreover, individuals can contact 211 to discover local resources and community assistance programs.
Local food banks also play a crucial role in supporting families experiencing food insecurity.
