According to a Ukrainian official, Russian soldiers accidentally revealed their positions when they attempted to shoot down a Ukrainian flag suspended from balloons floating over occupied territory.
The incident occurred during a symbolic gesture commemorating the foundation of the eastern Ukraine city of Avdiyivka, which is under Ukrainian control.
Russian Soldiers Expose Positions in Attempt to Down Ukrainian Flag
Vitalii Barabash, director of the Avdiivka city military administration, reported that the sizeable Ukrainian flag was attached to dozens of helium balloons and launched from Avdiyivka to commemorate the 245th anniversary of the city’s founding.
The flag’s journey took it over the Russian-occupied city of Donetsk, where Russian soldiers attempted to bring it down using various means, inadvertently revealing their firing positions.
Barabash explained, “When the Ukrainian flag flew from Avdiyivka to Donetsk, the Russians attempted to shoot it down using all available means, thereby revealing their firing positions.”
Barabash highlighted the flag launch as one of the most successful ever from Avdiivka to Donetsk, although he did not provide specifics regarding subsequent events or the Ukrainian military’s response.
He stated, “Undoubtedly, it was the most spectacular flag launch in history. Several hours were spent with the Ukrainian flag fluttering over occupied Donetsk.
I received numerous communications from residents of occupied territory expressing their eagerness for Donetsk’s liberation.

Ukrainian Flag Soars Over Occupied Donetsk as Moscow-Backed Elections Proceed
On the Telegram channel “Typical Donetsk,” footage of the Ukrainian flag flying over various parts of the Russian-occupied city was shared.
Since 2014, when conflicts erupted in eastern Ukraine, resulting in the annexation of Crimea and ongoing tensions between Ukraine and Russia, Donetsk has been under Russian occupation.
Barabash’s remarks coincided with elections in several Moscow-controlled territories, including Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhia.
Kyiv and Western nations have criticized these elections as “fake” and a “sham.” It is anticipated that the Kremlin will declare a decisive victory in these elections, escalating regional tensions.
The unintentional disclosure of Russian military positions during the balloon-launched flag display is a singular and symbolic event in the ongoing conflict, highlighting the unwavering resolve of Ukrainians and the complexity of the regional situation.
