2024 SNAP Benefits Set to Rise: Boost for Food Stamp Recipients

The Food and Nutrition Service of the United States Department of Agriculture alters SNAP maximum allocations, deductions, as well as income eligibility rules at the start of each federal fiscal year – October 1.

These modifications are based on the cost of living, which is the amount of money required to maintain a basic level of living. 

The FNS enhanced maximum allotments along with shelter caps for most US states and territories until 2024.

Maximum SNAP Allotments

Maximum allocations for the 48 contiguous states and D.C., Alaska, Guam, and the U.S. All of the Virgin Islands grew. 

Meanwhile, the amount for SNAP beneficiaries in Hawaii has been reduced by $35. In accordance with the USDA website, the maximum SNAP allotments for a family of four are as follows:

  • $973 for all 48 states and D.C.
  • Alaska ranges from $1,248 to $1,937.
  • Hawaii costs $1,759.
  • Guam: $1,434.
  • U.S. $1,251 for the Virgin Islands.

2024 Maximum Shelter Deduction

The amount of money SNAP users can deduct — rent, repair expenses, and utilities — that exceeds half of their total earnings when calculating benefits is referred to as the shelter cap value. 

Unless a single individual in the home is senior or disabled, the shelter cap in the 48 contiguous states and D.C. raised by $48, up to $672. The maximum homeless shelter deduction has also been increased to $179.66. The following are the maximum shelter deductions for 2024:

  • $672 for 48 states and D.C.
  • Alaska costs $1,073.
  • Hawaii is $905 per person.
  • Guam: $789.
  • U.S. $529 for the Virgin Islands.

The total resource limit for every state and territory remains at $2,750. The cap will also stay at $4,250 for households with at least one person who is 60 or older or disabled.
