Researchers Suggest Magic Mushrooms as Potential Treatment for Depression, Anxiety, and PTSD

A single dose of psilocybin, when combined with psychotherapy, can result in a “rapid, robust, and sustained reduction” in signs and symptoms of severe depression, based on a recent study.

The Journal of the American Medical Association released a study on the usage of psilocybin mushrooms to treat severe depressive disorder yesterday.

In accordance with the Cleveland Clinic, MDD, or clinical depression, is a long-term mental condition characterized by a persistently low or depressed mood and a loss of interest in activities.

Psilocybin in Magic Mushroom Can Assist With Depression

In some circumstances, interventions like medicine or psychotherapy are ineffective.

However, there is growing evidence that psilocybin, the key element in “magic” mushrooms, can assist with depression and other illnesses such as anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder.

To assess the efficacy of psilocybin, the researchers performed trials at 11 sites in the United States with medically healthy persons aged 21 to 65 years who satisfied the MDD criteria.

Following screening, 104 subjects were randomly assigned to receive either a single 25-mg oral dosage of psilocybin or a placebo consisting of a 100-mg dosage of the B-vitamin niacin.

Along with a preliminary session, the dosage day included a seven- to ten-hour dosing session in a quiet, comfortable room.

Participants were urged to wear sunglasses and listen to a chosen soundtrack on headphones during each dosing session.

They reviewed their experiences with the therapists after each session. Participants’ depressive symptoms were assessed before therapy began, and then five times over the next 43 days.
