A 14-year-old boy named John Sheeran from Chatham found himself in juvenile detention facing attempted murder and assault with a dangerous weapon charge.
The incident occurred after Sheeran allegedly used a racial slur against a Black teenager and attempted to drown him at Goose Pond in Chatham, as reported by the Cape & Islands district attorney’s office.
Sheeran’s Alleged Assault on the Victim
However, Sheeran’s lawyer claims that what happened was innocent horseplay that spiraled out of control. This harrowing incident unfolded on July 19, involving Sheeran, another boy, and the victim, whose identities were kept anonymous in the police report.
The victim had been invited to the pond by a friend and arrived on his borrowed bicycle. However, tensions escalated quickly when Sheeran and the other boy began throwing rocks at him, prompting the victim to put on a lifejacket since he couldn’t swim.
What followed was a terrifying ordeal as Sheeran allegedly continued to hurl insults, threaten violence, and even submerged the victim underwater several times by grabbing his lifejacket.

Racial Tensions Among Youth
The victim, struggling to breathe, pleaded for mercy, while the other boy callously taunted him with references to George Floyd, whose tragic death in May 2020 ignited nationwide protests.
The victim’s cries for help were answered by a bystander, who intervened, ultimately saving the victim from further harm. The incident was reported to the Chatham Police Department two days later.
Sheeran’s attorney, Kevin Reddington, contends that the incident was a result of horseplay that got out of control and argues that the charges against his client are excessive. Reddington is planning to appeal to the Superior Court to secure Sheeran’s release.
This incident has left the community of Chatham shocked and saddened, with local officials expressing their condemnation of violence, especially when directed at children.
The incident also highlights the ongoing challenges of addressing racial tensions and discrimination among young people.
As the legal proceedings unfold, this case serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing underlying issues related to racism and violence among teenagers, with the hope that lessons can be learned to prevent such incidents in the future.
