The FBI has opened an investigation into a group of Uzbek nationals who were granted asylum at the southern United States-Mexico border.
According to intelligence reports, these migrants were aided by a human smuggler with connections to ISIS, causing security concerns regarding potential threats.
FBI Probes Uzbek Nationals’ Asylum Amidst ISIS-Linked Smuggling Concerns
Although no specific ISIS plot has been identified, officials are assiduously assessing the backgrounds of all individuals who have entered the United States, focusing on potential criminal risks.
Adrienne Watson, spokesperson for the National Security Council, emphasized that while there is currently no evidence to support detaining anyone, the situation prompted the distribution of an urgent classified intelligence report to President Joe Biden’s top Cabinet officials.
The incident illustrates the vulnerability of the United States to jihadists who may exploit the influx of migrants at the southern border.
The situation has prompted senior national security and administration officials to hold urgent discussions.
As Republicans intensify their focus on border security in preparation for the 2024 election, the incident has also been reported to crucial congressional committees.
A group of Uzbek migrants requested asylum in the United States earlier this year and were screened by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Concerns arose despite the absence of red flags in intelligence databases when it was discovered that a human smuggling network assisting Uzbek nationals included a member with ties to ISIS.
