Zinc-Air Breakthrough: Next-Gen EV Battery to Replace Lithium-ion

Recently, scientists at Tohoku University in Japan made a significant discovery that might unleash the potential of a potent, cost-effective battery that would lead to zinc-air breakthrough.

Scientists have enhanced the performance of zinc-air batteries, which had mostly been untapped for cutting-edge applications like powering electric cars, according to a study from Innovation Origins.

Zinc-Air Batteries’ Race with Lithium-Ion

Zinc-air batteries have very cheap manufacturing costs and the potential for substantial energy storage capacities since they are powered by a chemical interaction between zinc and oxygen. 

If a means could be found to outperform their lower power output, they could have a good chance of competing with popular lithium-ion batteries. 

According to IO, zinc-air batteries have a storage capacity that is three times more than that of lithium batteries, but further development is required to get the same level of potential power output. 

When compared to lithium batteries, which have an average voltage of 3.7 volts per cell, zinc-air batteries, which are currently employed in hearing aids and other tiny devices, have an average voltage of around 1.4 volts, which limits their potential for advanced utilization.

According to Nature, obtaining and controlling the materials required to make lithium batteries raises problems for the environment and people. Despite these difficulties, lithium-ion batteries continue to be the most popular kind of battery for portable gadgets and electric cars.

Even though further research is required, the innovations from this research might lessen the need for rare earth metal mining to power electric cars, smart gadgets, and even the power grid, saving money on the procurement and transportation of precious metals while minimizing damage to people and the environment.
