3,000 Reservists Deployed to Counter Russian Invasion in Ukraine
The decision comes as part of the broader Atlantic Resolve initiative, which has been ongoing since 2014 following Russia’s annexation of Crimea.
As tensions escalate, President Biden reaffirmed US commitment to NATO during his recent visit to Europe, though acknowledging some divisions within the Republican Party.
Additionally, he emphasized the importance of Ukraine’s democratic reforms for potential NATO membership.
Expanding Support in Europe: President Biden’s executive order enables the Pentagon to tap into an additional 3,000 military reservists to strengthen the US mission in Europe.
These reservists will join the existing estimated 100,000 US service members already deployed on the continent. Lt Gen Douglas Sims highlighted the significance of these additional forces, stating that they will enhance the US presence and operations, better supporting the ongoing mission in Europe.
The US mission in Europe, known as Atlantic Resolve, was initiated in 2014 as a response to Russia’s actions in Crimea and its pressure on Ukraine’s Donbas region.
Since its inception, the US has provided substantial aid to Ukraine, with over $76 billion sent, of which more than $46 billion has been military-related.
The latest deployment of reservists reinforces the US commitment to standing alongside NATO allies and supporting Ukraine in its struggle against Russian aggression.
President Biden’s visit to Europe included a high-profile Nato summit in Lithuania, where he reiterated US support for the alliance.
