Kennedy Jr.’s Promise: Student Loan Cancellation After Biden’s Defeat

Robert F. Kennedy Jr, a Democrat running for president in 2024, has added student loan debt cancellation to his platform after the Supreme Court rejected the Biden administration’s attempts to implement a similar program on Friday.

More than 40 million Americans would have benefited from the debt reduction, according to White House statistics. 

Biden’s Proposal for Student Loan Relief

Borrowers are scheduled to resume paying back their federal student loans in October after a break of more than three years caused by the coronavirus outbreak.

Under President Joe Biden’s plan, debtors who earn less than $125,000 annually might receive up to $10,000 in debt forgiveness, and Pell Grant winners from low-income families could receive $20,000 in debt forgiveness.

After the decision, Kennedy Jr, a Kennedy political heir, published a thread on Twitter criticizing the Biden administration’s inability to defend its program in light of the conservative majority of the Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision that found Joe Biden exceeded his authority by canceling federally held student debt without the approval of Congress.

Kennedy claimed that Joe Biden pursued a hollow solution that fell apart under legal scrutiny rather than implementing a strategy he knew would withstand a legal challenge.

Failure to Uphold Student Debt Pledge

As a result, he failed to uphold a campaign promise that was crucial to his appeal to young voters in the 2020 presidential election. President Biden knew his plan wouldn’t hold up in court, he continued. 

When I become president, I will mobilize the populace to put pressure on Congress to drop their party differences and pass legislation that will actually help the tens of millions of Americans who are drowning in student debt.

When Kennedy Jr. representative was contacted for clarification, the individual said that the significant relief he was referring to was “some type of student loan forgiveness.
