Inequality in Flight-Tracking: Student Banned for Tracking Elon Musk’s Jet

Late last year, Twitter blocked Sweeney’s personal account as well as all of his other over 30 accounts that followed the private jets of notable personalities like Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Vladimir Putin, and Donald Trump.

Musk had vowed to sue Sweeney at the time after claiming on Twitter that a crazy stalker had trailed a car transporting his son and attributing the incident to Sweeney’s jet-tracking account.

After that, the billionaire modified Twitter’s rules so that accounts could no longer share someone’s current location.

Twitter users are not allowed to share any real-time location information other than their own location or location data associated with a public engagement or event, such as a concert or political event, according to the rules.

Since then, Sweeney has started a new personal Twitter account as well as accounts to follow the movements of Gov. Ron DeSantis’ and Elon Musk’s private planes.

However, in order to comply with Twitter policy, his Twitter accounts now share data with a 24-hour delay, which, according to Sweeney, has cost him thousands of followers.

According to Sweeney, the number of followers on his personal account is less than one hundredth of what it was before he started publishing the data gradually.

Some others have switched to following the college student on Facebook or Instagram, where he claimed to have noticed an increase in new followers following his original Twitter ban.

The accounts of Sweeney have been suspended for more than six months. However, he claimed that recently, a number of accounts have appeared that exchange real-time flight data.

Multiple accounts that broadcast real-time flight information on Twitter yet were not blocked were located by Insider.

The only response Insider obtained from Twitter in regards to the individual accounts and Sweeney’s complaint was an automatic one that didn’t answer any of the queries.
