IRS Blunder: Taxpayers Receive Bills with Incorrect Due Dates

The IRS said that it mistakenly informed certain California residents that their payments were due in 21 days when, in reality, they have until later this year to make their payments.

In a statement on Wednesday, the tax department expressed regret for the oversight.

IRS Sends Incorrect Due Dates

It noted that it was legally compelled to send the bills, known as IRS Notice CP14, to taxpayers who owed the agency money for the 2022 tax year.

The IRS declined to say how many individuals received an incorrect letter, but tax preparation firm Jackson Hewitt claimed on Wednesday that the IRS is distributing millions of the warnings this month.

The mistake was made earlier this year when it was decided to give most Californian taxpayers more time to submit their taxes because of natural disasters such as winter storms, flooding, landslides, and mudslides.

Internal Revenue Services extended the deadline for residents of numerous California counties, including Los Angeles and San Francisco, to October 16 this year from the original April 18 deadline for filing annual tax returns without an extension.

Most Californian taxpayers have until later this year to pay under the disaster declaration, even though the notice they received stated they needed to pay in 21 days.

It claimed that it misinformed certain residents of California that their payments were due in 21 days when they have till later this year.

The IRS said that it mistakenly informed certain California residents that their payments were due in 21 days when, in reality, they have until later this year to make their payments.

The tax department apologized for the error in a statement on Wednesday. Those who owed the money for the 2022 tax year were required by law to receive the bills, known as IRS Notice CP14, according to the IRS.

The mistake results from a choice made early this year to give most people extra time. To let their clients know that they don’t have to transfer money to the IRS until October, some accountants and tax preparers posted notifications about incorrect letters on social media.

Jackson Hewitt recommended that recipients of a CP14 letter pay special attention to the message. This is so that the IRS can charge interest and penalties to taxpayers who owe money to them.

The IRS may eventually file a notice of federal lien, informing other creditors of its secured claim against your assets, if the outstanding balance is not paid.
