Twitter head of trust and safety, Ella Irwin, confirmed her resignation from the company late Friday after CEO Elon Musk publicly complained about the platform’s handling of tweets about transgender topics.
Irwin’s departure marked another significant event in the series of resignations experienced by the company under Musk’s leadership since he assumed control last year.
Musk’s Response to Complaints Tied to Irwin’s Twitter Departure
Although Irwin did not disclose the reason for her departure from Twitter, it occurred shortly after Musk expressed dissatisfaction with the platform’s handling of tweets related to a conservative documentary that raised concerns about medical transgender procedures for children and teenagers.
The reason behind Irwin’s departure was linked to Musk’s response to complaints lodged by Jeremy Boreing, the co-CEO of The Daily Wire. Boreing observed that tweets and retweets promoting their documentary, titled “What Is A Woman?”, were being suppressed by Twitter.
Additionally, Twitter was flagging these tweets and retweets as hate speech, preventing the movie from appearing on trending topics lists.

Irwin Expresses Gratitude Upon Departure
Furthermore, Boreing mentioned that Twitter revoked their agreement to premiere the documentary for free due to two instances of misgendering, which is prohibited on the platform.
In response, Musk acknowledged that this was a mistake made by several individuals at Twitter and asserted that it was permissible. He also stated that not using someone’s preferred pronouns might be considered impolite at most but does not violate any laws.
The Daily Wire’s documentary, “What Is A Woman?”, critically examines gender-related issues.
The presenter and creator of the documentary, Matt Walsh, traveled across the United States and Africa to explore the titular question: “What is a woman?” The video received both praise and criticism for its treatment of transgender matters.
Irwin, in a tweet, mentioned that she had left Twitter a day before making her announcement and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with the company.
Twitter has faced challenges in winning back advertisers following Musk’s significant changes, as well as the wave of layoffs and resignations that followed his acquisition of the company in October 2022.
Musk himself stepped down as CEO and handed over leadership to Linda Yaccarino, who possesses extensive experience in the media and advertising industry, having worked for firms such as NBCUniversal.
