Alabama has implemented a prohibition on transgender women athletes engaging in collegiate sports teams designated for females.
The previous limitation in Alabama exclusively prevented transgender athletes from taking part in sports designated for girls in kindergarten through twelfth grade.
Alabama Governor Ivey Signs New Legislation
However, the newly enacted legislation, signed by Alabama Governor Kay Ivey, extends the ban to transgender women competing on female sports teams at the college level. This law, which has an immediate effect, is part of a broader trend of conservative states enacting anti-trans legislation.
Governor Ivey provides an explanation of the legislation, stating, “If you are biologically male, you will not be permitted to compete in women’s and girls’ sports in Alabama.” The governor, aged 78, emphasized that this policy is rooted in the concept of fairness.
In 2021, the state passed a law prohibiting transgender athletes from participating in K-12 sports teams. This legislation effectively prevents transgender athletes from playing sports according to their gender identity, even if they have undergone hormone treatment.

Unfair Advantage Argument
The bill received a 16-4 vote in favor in the Alabama Senate and an overwhelming 83-5 vote in the House of Representatives, with numerous abstentions. Supporters of the bill argue that transgender women have an unfair advantage over cisgender females in athletic competitions.
Republican Representative Susan DuBose highlights that allowing transgender women to participate in female sports would disadvantage cisgender women, despite any hormone therapy they may have undergone. DuBose, who sponsored the bill, asserts, “Forcing women to compete against biological men would undermine decades of progress made by women in achieving equal opportunities in athletics.”
The recent law in Alabama, which prohibits transgender athletes from joining college women’s sports teams, has faced swift criticism from LGBTQ+ advocates who argue that it is discriminatory and harmful to transgender youth.
Carmarion Anderson-Harvey, the Alabama State Director of the Human Rights Campaign, strongly condemns the legislation, referring to it as a “systematic attack against LGBTQ+ individuals.”
Anderson-Harvey points out that the Alabama governor and “extremist lawmakers” have enacted four anti-LGBTQ+ bills in the past two years. These bills include restrictions on bathroom and locker room usage for transgender individuals and the prohibition of gender-affirming medical care for transgender minors.
Considering these actions, Anderson-Harvey asserts that these politicians are creating an increasingly hostile environment in Alabama, not only for transgender individuals but also for the entire LGBTQ+ community.
