Shark Sighting: Enormous 10-Foot Great White Spotted Close to Jersey Shore on Memorial Day

During Memorial Day, a sizable great white shark, with a length of 10 feet 3 inches, was observed swimming ominously in the ocean near the Jersey Shore.

After being initially tagged on April 23rd, the young shark called Penny was spotted again on Monday, May 29th, just before 7 a.m., near the beach where vacationers were anticipated to gather.

Tracking Devices Attached to 92 Great White Sharks

Penny, an astonishingly heavy shark weighing 522 pounds, was spotted swimming uncomfortably close to the boundary marked by buoys on Monday morning in Ocean City. The Ocearch researchers have affixed tracking devices to 92 great white sharks, including this notably sizable young shark in the Western North Atlantic.

The name Penny was bestowed upon the shark in recognition of Salty Penny Canvas, a business based in Morehead City, North Carolina. This establishment has provided valuable assistance to Ocearch through its specialized marine canvas projects, which have enhanced the team’s operations at sea and equipped them to confront challenging circumstances.

The non-profit organization expresses deep gratitude for the support from the Penny family and eagerly anticipates gaining knowledge from Penny the Shark.

Sharks captured by Ocearch for the purpose of collecting biological samples are fitted with electronic trackers before being released back into the wild.

Students and organizations have the opportunity to investigate the migratory patterns of these sharks using the data acquired through this openly accessible methodology.

Recent shark attacks in Hawaii, Florida, and New Jersey this summer have sparked concerns regarding water safety. In the Florida Keys, two fishermen were attacked by sharks within a span of 36 hours earlier this month.

Given that the sharks migrate annually from the Florida Keys to the Northeast and eventually to Canada, researchers have cautioned Memorial Day beachgoers to exercise caution.

While many individuals fear shark attacks, the International Wildlife Museum indicates that the probability of being killed by a shark is exceedingly low, approximately one in 3.75 million. This likelihood is smaller than the chances of experiencing a stroke, being struck by lightning, or encountering mishaps with fireworks.
