Bill Gates: Amazon and Google Face a Major Threat From Artificial Intelligence

Generative Artificial Intelligence, despite gaining attention since the launch of ChatGPT, has not yet been integrated into search engines.

AI has long been integrated into internet search, responsible for providing search suggestions and ranking websites. However, the incorporation of generative AI into this domain is yet to be realized.

Future Artificial Intelligence Assistants

Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, predicts that this technology will ultimately render search engines unnecessary.

Speaking at the AI Forward 2023 event, hosted by Goldman Sachs and SV Angle, Gates asserted that the company that emerges triumphant in the AI race will achieve this feat by developing a personal digital assistant.

According to Gates, individuals with access to this assistant will no longer rely on search sites, productivity platforms, or even e-commerce platforms like Amazon. This forthcoming AI assistant, currently not openly developed, will possess the capability to anticipate user needs and perform tasks that users may not have the time for, such as reading.

Gates acknowledged that widespread adoption of this advanced digital assistant is still a distant prospect.

The tech billionaire emphasized that the winner of the AI race, namely the successful developer of a personal AI assistant, has an equal chance of being a tech startup or one of the major tech giants.

While Gates expressed his expectation for Microsoft’s involvement, he also acknowledged his admiration for a few startups, including Inflection.

Inflection AI, a smaller tech startup, is actively working towards realizing Gates’ vision of an AI assistant. Gates further discussed the potential revolutionary impact of AI in the healthcare sector, suggesting that the technology could pave the way for drugs capable of curing ailments like Alzheimer’s disease.

Addressing concerns about job displacement, Gates highlighted that AI-powered robots will affect workers across various industries, from white-collar to blue-collar, as the cost-effectiveness of AI surpasses that of human labor.

Professor Gary Marcus, an AI expert, echoed these concerns during a recent Senate hearing on AI oversight, emphasizing the substantial risk that this technology poses to jobs.
