The ethics of AI: Why the ‘Godfather of AI’ spoke out

The ‘godfather’ of artificial intelligence (AI) has thrown a bombshell into the simmering discussion about the risks posed by the technology after sensationally leaving his job at Google and admitting that his life’s work has been a mistake.

Geoffrey Hinton, a pioneering British-Canadian, 75, added fuel to the fire of the developing Silicon Valley civil war by issuing a terrifying warning that scary chatbots like the enormously popular ChatGPT may soon surpass humans in intelligence.

The ‘Godfather’ Geoffrey Hinton Issued Resignation Letter

An intense debate broke out earlier this year when more than 1,000 tech billionaires signed a statement urging a halt to the dangerous race to enhance AI.

Before humans lose control of technology and run the possibility of being wiped out by robots, they argued, immediate action was required.

He has now issued his resignation and raised the alarm about the dangers of how swiftly AI is developing in what is a seismic moment in the conflict between the two opposing camps.

Also, he is hardly the only prominent figure in technology to express worries about AI.

In March, a number of community members signed a letter urging artificial intelligence labs to halt the training of the most potent AI systems for at least six months due to the grave risks they pose to humans and society.

After shockingly departing Google and confessing his life’s work was a mistake, the “godfather” of AI has sparked a debate over the technology’s perils.

The letter was released by the Elon Musk-funded Future of Life Institute just two weeks after OpenAI unveiled GPT-4, an improved version of the technology that drives the popular chatbot ChatGPT.

GPT-4 was used to draft lawsuits, ace standardized examinations, and create a functional website from a hand-drawn drawing in early tests and a company showcase.

They have invested a lot of time and money in AI, but it will inevitably be used for evil purposes and might be a component of more extensive attacks, particularly if nation-states use it.
