Trader Joe’s fruit product has been recalled due to Hepatitis contamination

Frozen organic strawberries sold at Costco, Aldi, Trader Joe’s, and other retailers are being recalled after being linked to a hepatitis A epidemic in Washington state.

The US Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning to consumers not to consume, sell, or serve certain brands of frozen organic strawberries after five people became sick with hepatitis A after eating them. Two people have been admitted to the hospital.

Trader Joe’s Recall

The sick people in all five cases had eaten frozen strawberries sold by a single supplier, according to investigators with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In 2022, this supplier imported strawberries from specific farms in Baja California, Mexico.

The resilient hepatitis A virus can withstand freezing. On human hands, it lasts for hours, and on polluted surfaces, it lasts for days.

Two suppliers have now voluntarily recalled their frozen organic strawberries as a result of the investigation: Scenic Fruit Company of Gresham, Oregon, and California Splendor of San Diego, California. These suppliers sold their frozen organic strawberries to Costco, Aldi, KeHE, Vital Choice Seafood, and PCC Community Markets in specific states, as well as to Trader Joe’s nationwide.

The liver is attacked by the hepatitis A virus. 15 to 50 days after consuming tainted food or water, people become ill. Fatigue, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, and pale stool are all signs of hepatitis A infection. Some infections, especially in kids under the age of 6, might not show any symptoms.
