Police arrested Dr. Alexander Larrochelle, who purportedly operated on Mavarez after he visited a local police station to submit a statement Sunday. Dr. Larrochelle will be detained for up to 45 days while authorities conduct an investigation.

According to Mavarez’s mother, Petra Rivero, the surgeon used a lipo laser on her. Dr. Larrochelle utilized a laser to break down fat cells and tighten loose skin as Mavarez’s condition worsened.

Petro stated that her daughter complained of significant pain but was not given anything to alleviate the ache. She went on to say that Mavarez had her own lipo pump at the facility to help with the edema, but one of the nurses refused to use it.

Mavarez began convulsing at 10 p.m. and was not intubated until Dr. Larrochelle arrived at the clinic at 12:30 a.m.
