IRS extends California tax deadline in disaster-affected areas; Here’s until when you can process yours!

The Internal Revenue Service has extended the tax deadline for taxpayers in disaster areas across the majority of California, as well as portions of Alabama and Georgia.

As Southern California prepares for its first blizzard since 1989, including in the mountains outside of Los Angeles, the IRS announced the extension on Friday.

Why IRS Extends Tax Deadline In California?

Following a string of wildfires last year, the state has experienced catastrophic flooding, mudslides, landslides, and severe winter storms this year.

Last month, severe storms and tornadoes also hit Georgia and Alabama. The IRS initially announced extensions of the tax deadline for all three states until May 15; they have now extended it through October 16.

The IRS included taxpayers who resided or operated a business in the following counties in January and February:

  • Alameda
  • Alpine
  • Amador
  • Butte
  • Calaveras
  • Colusa
  • Contra Costa
  • Del Norte
  • El Dorado
  • Fresno
  • Glenn
  • Humboldt
  • Inyo
  • Los Angeles
  • Madera
  • Marin
  • Mariposa
  • Mendocino
  • Merced
  • Monterey
  • Napa
  • Nevada
  • Placer
  • Sacramento
  • San Ben

The California middle-class tax rebate that is offered to residents is being decided by the IRS as to whether it should be treated as taxable income.

The IRS claims that the tax relief delays a number of tax filing and payment deadlines that were set to begin on January 8, 2023. The deadline for filing returns and paying any taxes that were initially due during this time period is May 15, 2023.

This includes the April 18 deadline for 2022 individual income tax returns as well as the March 15 and April 18 deadlines for 2022 business returns. Taxpayers who qualify may also contribute to their IRAs and health savings accounts through May 15, 2023.

The Internal Revenue Service has extended the tax deadline for taxpayers in disaster areas across the majority of California, as well as portions of Alabama and Georgia.

For the 2023 tax year, the IRS has already started accepting returns. You can begin filing your taxes right away even if you’re still awaiting documentation. Your 2023 tax refund will be issued as soon as your return is filed.

Although the IRS has extended the filing deadline for the majority of California taxpayers, this does not mean that taxpayers in California will have to wait an additional month to receive their tax refund. Customers of TurboTax and H&R Block can receive interest-free refund advances.

You really do receive your money minutes after filing; there is no credit check and no additional cost.

Anyone may ask for a filing deadline extension, according to the IRS. You must submit Form 4868 in order to automatically receive a 6-month extension of time to file your return. A filing deadline extension is not the same as a payment deadline extension. Any tax that is not paid by the return’s initial due date may be subject to a late payment penalty.
