Russia-Ukraine war: Washington to reveal a $2.2 billion aid for Kyiv, including longer-range missiles

Multiple sources expect the US to announce a new Ukraine security package for around $2.2 billion that will include longer-range missiles for the first time.

Two officials have stated that the package, which is due to be announced in the coming days, will include a pledge to give Ukraine the Ground-Launched Small Diameter Bomb, a guided missile with a range of 90 miles.

US Aid For Ukraine

The package will not contain the long-desired ATACMS missile with a range greater than 200 miles, despite the fact that the missiles will virtually double the range of Ukrainian weaponry.

The United States has consistently rejected Ukraine’s demands for this technology out of worry that it may be used to strike far within Russia.

This is the first security package since the United States agreed in January to provide Ukraine with upgraded M-1 Abrams tanks, a move made in conjunction with European countries supplying Leopard 2 tanks manufactured in Germany.

The package, which could be disclosed as early as Friday, would consist of $500 million in weapons and equipment pulled straight from US stocks and around $1.7 billion in supplies to be purchased through military contractors (USAI).

Olivia Dalton, a spokesman for the White House, stated on Tuesday that there would be another announcement of security support to Ukraine soon without providing any information.

Multiple US sources expect the US to announce a new Ukraine security package for around $2.2 billion that will include longer-range missiles for the first time.

The Ground-Launched Small Diameter Bomb, which is launched from a HIMARS rocket launcher, has a range of approximately 90 miles, according to Saab, who co-developed the weapon with Boeing.

This is more than double the range of the GMLRS munitions being launched from HIMARS rocket launchers by Ukraine. The long-range missile then deploys tiny wings and propels itself toward its target using a rocket engine.

However, Ukraine will not receive the new weapon immediately because it would not come directly from US stockpiles. Instead, the United States will contract with weapons makers to give Ukraine the long-range missile, a procedure that might take several weeks.

An official stated that the package also contained equipment and support systems for the Patriot missile system and ammunition for artillery and HIMARS.

Ukrainian personnel has not yet completed training on the Patriot system at Fort Sill, but the United States is ensuring that logistics and maintenance are in place well before the first Patriot battery becomes operational in Ukraine, according to the official.

As the war nears its one-year anniversary, the United States has announced three of the largest aid packages to Ukraine within the past month as a gesture of continued support.
