Gates foundation find $8.3 billion for poverty and disease but still targeted with critics

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation,  which was founded by the former richest person in the world, Bill Gates, and his wife, Melinda, to tackle poverty, sickness, and unfairness in developing nations and other areas of the world, has declared a substantial budget for the upcoming year.

Mark Suzman, the foundation’s chief executive officer (CEO), reports that the non-governmental organization has earmarked $8.3 billion in 2023 to finance its worldwide humanitarian initiatives.

Gates Foundation Faces Criticism

This information was released in the CEO’s annual letter, which was sent by the African Media Agency (AMA) on Tuesday on behalf of the firm.

The letter stated that the decision to draft the organization’s largest budget in its history was made to confront the various crises that threaten to reverse global progress on Sustainable Development Goals since the outbreak of COVID-19.

All of these crises have taken a substantial toll on the world’s poorest people, including war, economic turbulence, climate-related disasters, and large declines in vaccination rates for avoidable infectious illnesses.

The budget’s adoption by the board of trustees puts the foundation on track to achieve its pledge to reach an annual payout of $9 billion by 2026, a 15% increase over the projected payout for 2022, according to the letter.

AMA reminds us that people in low- and middle-income nations, especially women and girls, are enduring the terrible effects of overlapping global crises that the international community has yet to solve with the required political will.

According to Suzman, the foundation’s large wagers represent its distinctive charitable position, especially during times of distress.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which was founded by the former richest person in the world, Bill Gates, and his wife, Melinda, to tackle poverty, sickness, and unfairness in developing nations and other areas of the world, has declared a substantial budget for the upcoming year.

As the biggest foundation in the world, the Gates Foundation is frequently targeted by detractors who assert that it has too much influence in determining global priorities while being answerable to no one.

Suzman used the opportunity to answer some of these complaints in a piece titled, “Why are a few unelected millionaires dictating the agenda for global health and development?”
Suzman said in the letter that the Gates Foundation’s disproportionate influence may be a positive factor in the globe.

He wrote, “It is true that our dollars, voice, and convening ability give us access and influence that many others do not.” Additionally, it is true that we may behave in ways that others cannot. Because of this, we may bring attention to situations that might otherwise go unnoticed and assist in their resolution.”

Suzman also reiterated a popular argument regarding the benefits of charity, stating that, in contrast to private enterprises and elected authorities, philanthropists have greater freedom to take risks. “Because our foundation does not need to earn a profit as companies do, produce rapid results like governments do, or seek funding like many non-governmental organizations do, we may make high-risk bets on creative solutions that may take a decade or more to pay off,” he said.

The Gates Foundation, established in 2000, utilizes its $53.3 billion endowment to eliminate illnesses such as malaria and enhance the lives of those living in poverty, particularly in developing nations. It also seeks to increase worldwide gender equality. It focuses on K-12 and postsecondary education in the United States. One of its current objectives is to enhance math education in the United States.
