Walter Cunningham, the last living astronaut from the Apollo program’s first successful crewed space flight, passed away in Houston on Tuesday. He was 90.

In a statement, NASA acknowledged Cunningham’s death but did not specify the cause. According to a spokeswoman for his family, Cunningham passed away in a hospital due to complications from a fall, after a long and complete life.

Cunningham was one of three astronauts on board the Apollo 7 mission in 1968, an 11-day spacecraft that transmitted live television transmissions while orbiting the Earth and paved the stage for the lunar landing less than a year later.

Cunningham, a civilian at the time, crewed the trip alongside Navy Captain Walter M. Schirra and Air Force Major Donn F. Eisele. Cunningham was the lunar module pilot for the space mission that launched on October 11 from Cape Kennedy Air Force Station in Florida and landed in the Atlantic Ocean south of Bermuda.

NASA stated that Cunningham, Eisele, and Schira’s mission was nearly flawless. Their spacecraft performed so well that NASA dispatched Apollo 8 to orbit the moon in July 1969 as a precursor to the Apollo 11 moon landing
