Researchers are examining if the COVID-19 virus can alter an infected person’s vision and depth perception.
Understanding how COVID-19 affects the eyes and whether it could act as a virus infection route are the goals of the study, which is being co-led by Griffith University’s Menzies Health Institute and South Korea’s Center for Convergent Research for Emerging Virus Infection, Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology.
What Is POT Syndrome?
The trigeminal nerves are susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection, and the virus has been shown to spread through the respiratory system and brain to the eye.
Prof. Suresh Mahalingam, principal investigator and co-author of the study, explained that the virus can start impairing vision when the retina thickens due to inflammation of the optic nerves, abnormal fluid buildup, and immune cell infiltration.
It appears that hazy vision is merely a symptom and not the result of long-term eye tissue deterioration. Additionally, only a very tiny number of persons are expected to be impacted.
Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, or POTS, is a condition that can result in a rapid heartbeat, dizziness, and other problems with the neurological and cardiovascular systems.

COVID-19 Vaccine
After being exposed to the Epstein-Barr virus when she was 12 years old, Kim Ryberg, now 34, soon developed POTS. Her extreme attacks of dizziness and fainting have continued ever since.
She claims that at one point in her late 20s, it became so bad that she was unable to climb even one flight of stairs. The autonomic nerve system, which regulates heart rate and blood pressure, was allegedly damaged by Epstein Barr exposure, according to her doctors.
He and his team conducted a thorough review of patient health records when they began to hear reports of persons developing POTS after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine.
According to the study’s findings, there are fewer than five cases of POTS per million vaccinations. In fact, the likelihood of developing POTS is increased by having a COVID-19 infection more than by receiving a vaccination, according to Kwan’s research.
