Tax Rebate 2023: Which states will continue sending refunds next year?

While you may not be receiving a Christmas bonus this year, many states are providing residents with a bonus tax rebate or stimulus check to help them cope with ongoing inflation. Some have finished sending out funds, but many others are still issuing payments.

Massachusetts only recently began returning $3 billion in surplus tax revenue. The payments, which amount to about 14% of an individual’s 2021 state income tax liability, are expected to keep going for at least until December 15.

In October, South Carolina began issuing printed checks, debit cards, and direct deposits for up to $800, and this will continue until the end of the year. State lawmakers approved the income tax rebates as part of this year’s $8.4 billion budget.

California

Millions of Californians are receiving inflation relief checks of up to $1,050 via direct deposit or debit card. The state anticipates that 95% of the payments will be made this year, with the remaining checks arriving by January 15, 2023.

Colorado

Because of the 1992 Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights (TABOR) Amendment, state residents who filed their 2021 return by June 30 should have received a physical check for $750 by September 30. (Joint filers receive $1,500.)

Delaware

Following Governor John Carney’s approval of the Delaware Relief Rebate Program in April, all residents who filed their 2020 tax returns received a $300 stimulus check. Though if you filed jointly, you should have received a payment, which began in May.

Florida

According to Republican Gov. Ron DeSanti, nearly 60,000 Florida families received one-time payments of $450 per child to offset the costs of rising inflation.

Georgia

In March, Gov. Brian Kemp signed legislation authorizing rebates to taxpayers who filed state returns for both 2020 and 2021. In May, single taxpayers received $250, heads of households received $375, and married couples filing jointly received $500.

Hawaii

Hawaii citizens earning less than $100,000 in 2021 – or $200,000 if filing jointly – received a $300 tax rebate this year. The rebate is also available to dependents, so an eligible family of four could receive $1,200.

Idaho

Gov. Brad Little signed legislation in February that provides $75 to each taxpayer and dependent, or 12% of their state income tax return for 2020, whichever is greater. Checks began to be distributed in March, and residents can check the status of their rebates online.

Illinois

The $1.83 billion Illinois relief package includes income and property tax rebates, which should be distributed through November. Residents of Illinois who paid state property taxes in 2021 and meet certain salary requirements are eligible.

Indiana

Due to the state’s automatic taxpayer refund law, all Hoosiers are eligible for $125 rebates, regardless of income. Direct deposit payments began in May, with printed checks scheduled to be sent to the 1.7 million taxpayers who did not provide banking information.

Maine

Maine taxpayers with an adjusted gross income of less than $100,000 who filed their 2021 state tax returns were eligible for an $850 direct relief payment this year. Couples filing jointly received a single $1,700 payment.

Massachusetts

Massachusetts state tax revenue is tied to fluctuations in wages and salaries under a 1986 voter-approved law known as Chapter 62F, with any excess returned to taxpayers. This is only the second year since the law’s passage that the refund has been activated.

Minnesota

Certain Minnesota workers are entitled to one-time payments of $750, such as emergency responders, health care staff, court officials, and retail workers.

New Jersey

The Affordable New Jersey Communities for Homeowners and Renters (ANCHOR), a $2 billion property tax relief program signed by Gov. Phil Murphy at the end of June, has resulted in property tax rebates for approximately 2 million New Jersey households.

New Mexico

The Land of Enchantment issued a rebate to all taxpayers — $500 for independent registrants and $1,000 for joint filers, heads of households, and survivor benefits.

Virginia

Millions of Virginia residents received $250 one-time tax rebates, or $500 if they filed jointly. Print checks and direct deposits were used to make payments. Direct deposit will be used for 1.3 million tax rebates, while paper checks will be used for 1.9 million.
