Higher Payments
Due to the first day of the following month, January, coming on a national holiday, SSI users will receive two payments instead of one this month. If the first day of the month falls on a weekend or holiday, the SSA will still mail the check to recipients on the last business day of the previous month so that they will have it by the start of the month.
In 2023, the first of the month will fall on a weekend or holiday, resulting in two payments made to recipients within the same month on many occasions. Months like April, June, September, and December fall within this category.
The annual cost-of-living adjustments make the second December payment somewhat higher than the payment earlier this month.
In order to protect the purchasing power of recipients, the Social Security Administration has boosted SSI payment rates nearly annually since January 1974, when the program was initially made available to those who qualified.
