The final requirement is that your school tax liability for the 2022–2023 academic year must exceed your 2022 STAR benefit.

If you were eligible, you ought to have already received a check in the mail, but the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance website has further information and details on eligibility.

Additionally, late in the summer, New York City Mayor Eric Adams signed legislation providing a one-time, up to $150 property tax rebate to the city’s hundreds of thousands of low- and middle-class homeowners.

The rebate is available to owners of one, two, or three-family homes who made $250,000 or less in income in 2020, providing that the home is their primary residence.

The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance website offers eligibility information, but those who were eligible should have automatically received a check by the end of June.

Additionally, New York City Mayor Eric Adams approved legislation providing a one-time property tax relief of up to $150 to hundreds of thousands of low- and middle-class city homeowners.

Owners of one, two, or three-family homes who made $250,000 or less in income in 2020 are qualified for the rebate as long as the home serves as their principal residence.

Beginning in late August, payments will be automatically delivered to homeowners who got a School Tax Relief (STAR) credit or exemption during the fiscal year 2023. A letter on how to verify your eligibility will be sent if the Department of Finance has insufficient income information.

Owners who believe they are eligible for the return but do not qualify for a STAR exemption can apply. The claim deadline is in November, and the refund checks should be sent out in the fall.
